Live Music with Dave Cowden

Dave’s bio, in life and music ~

Dave studied piano at an early age and at age 14, moved to guitar, then later studied voice as well as theory, harmony and composition in college. He plays several instruments.  

He enlisted in the Army in 1966 during the Vietnam War and graduated1st in an Officer Candidate School Prep Unit at Ft Knox, Kentucky. For that he was honored with The Key to the City of Louisville, Kentucky, presented by Mayor Kenneth Schmied, December 1966.  After overseas military service he returned to music.

Dave has recorded at Columbia Records studio in Nashville,Sound Recorders, Kansas City and Rainbow Recording Studios in Omaha. He has performed in Canada and Europe as well as the United States.  His credits include Billboard Magazine Top 100 records nationally two times, once in the Rock Charts and again in the Country Charts.  Winner of a national country music competition and releasing an album, his group was voted ‘Most Promising New Artist’ on an independent label. This band was an opening act for many notable artists including Merle Haggard, Ronnie Milsap, Ricky Skaggs, Gary Morris, Bobby Bare, Kathy Mattea, Larry Henley and others.

In the  earlier rock years, his group did shows with The Mamas and Papas, The Kingsmen, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, Chicago, The Guess Who, Steve Miller Band, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Vogues, The Newbeats, Ray Hildebrand and numerous other major acts. His group also sang the National Anthem and performed half time entertainment at NFL games.  

Retiring from a highly successful band in 1988, he played guitar, violin and piano in church.  Then in 2008, he was honored by being inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame. Dave has played and enjoys many genres of music and is a big fan of the local music scene.  

All five of Dave’s children are musical, two are song writers and performers, another has a BA degree in symphonic woodwinds.  In 2010 they performed in concert together at the Independence Event Center, Independence, MO.

In 2015, Dave signed a record deal with Numero Records – Chicago for their release of songs recorded in the ’60s. He currently performs regularly on the Oregon coast where he lives with his wife, Johnni and three feline friends.
